My childhood friend. So many memories rush back. The Grutles lived in the brick apartment building on the corner of W Lincoln and Broadway (second unit in) before building the home (with wall-to-wall carpeting!) by McKinley School. We slid on the hill behind the building, played on the roof of the garage shed, roller-skated, played hop-scotch, played endless Monopoly and Clue. She had the first Barbie doll I ever saw. She loved cats. We rescued a sick mole and brought it to her home (Mrs. Grutle, always patient, had serious reservations!). We bicycled everywhere. She had a chemistry set that meant endless startling experiments. Gail was always bright and adventurous. She talked me into going skiing for the first time. Her Dad had a black and white Buick and would smoke his cigar while giving us rides to Pebble Lake. Her Mom always had something delicious cooking. When my Dad died at 97, even though we had not had contact for almost 50 years, she came to the funeral. Her confidence and intelligence and sensible outlook have had a lasting impact in my life and, I am sure, the lives of many others.

Great tribute Susan.  We lived in those same apartments on Broadway.  Gail was a beautiful person, gone too soon.

I reconnected with Gail at one of our more recent class reunions and it was fun to reminisce those old high school memories with her.  I was so envious of the pink princess phone in her bedroom with her own telephone number no less (!) and she said it was all her mother's idea.  And she reminded me of a time when she came to my house to see my baby brother Jeff (who is now in his sixties).  We tiptoed into his room and said we had to be very quiet so we wouldn't wake him up and she was very envious because she was the only kid in her family.  I couldn't believe anyone would be envious of teenager me having to help take care of a baby!  RIP dear Gail.
