MICHIGAN CITY — Mr. Michael C. Henkes, age 63, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on January 28, 2012, at his residence Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana, USA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Sinai Temple, with Rabbi Reni Dickman officiating. Private interment of ashes will be held in Sinai Temple Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Henkes was born May 6, 1948, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Fredrick Adair and Laurel (Kohlhase) Henkes, who both preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Caryl (Kohn) Henkes, whom he married on June 10, 1979, in Michigan City, Indiana.

Michael is survived by his four children, Phyllis Lynn (Ted Burns) Oviatt, of Michigan City, Indiana, David Mark (Sandy) Oviatt, of La Porte, Indiana, Edward Allen (Beth) Oviatt, of Otsego, Michigan, and Cynthia Ann Oviatt-Jones, of La Porte, Indiana; 10 grandchildren, Nicole Oviatt, Stephanie Caddo, David R.J. Oviatt, Josh Ferrell, Alyshia Fenton, Kyle Oviatt, Diana Fenton, Jenna Oviatt, Seager Oviatt, and Ethan Oviatt; five great grandchildren, Kiandra Crowder, J'Ven Lewis, Aiden Fenton, Isabella Fenton, and Joshua Sims; three brothers, Bill (Kay), Dick, and Chuck (Dawn) Henkes, all of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Diana Kohn; and two sister-in-laws, Rita (Jim) Schwartz and Harriet (Dave Freedman) Kohn. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Keven Ray Ferrell, his father-in-law, Robert Kohn, and his son-in-law, Jason Alan Fleming.

Michael was a member of the Sinai Temple, the Michigan City Fish and Game Club, the Fergus Falls Fire Department Relief Association, and was a former Boy Scout Leader. He retired from the Michigan City Port Authority, where he worked as a maintenance supervisor. He loved the outdoors and had a very deep appreciation for nature. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and tying fish flies. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all of his family.
